    Sydney - Friday - July 1: (RWE Aust Business News) - The Australian sharemarket slid lower this morning as investors took profits from recent gains and shrugged off strong offshore markets, including Wall Street's 153-point advance.

    At midday the ASX 200 index had lost 29.1 points to 4578.9 and the All Ordinaries index was down 24.3 points at 4635.5.

    The September SPI200 futures contract fell 35 points to 4566.

    Trading was moderate with turnover of $1.8 billion after two hours, comprising 571 rises, 312 falls and 304 steadies.

    BHP Billiton was the busiest stock by value with trading worth $157 million and fell 16c to $43.64.

    Rio Tinto declined 52c to $82.47 and Newcrest was down 17c at $37.54 while OZ Minerals rose 6c to $13.26 and Atlas Iron put on 2c to $3.75.

    Among the banks National fell 30c to $25.32, Commonwealth lost 52c to $51.78, ANZ slid 16c to $21.84 and Westpac gave back 23c to $22.03.

    Macquarie Group declined 17c to $31.08, AMP was down 6c at $4.83, IAG dropped 8c to $3.32, Westfield Group lost 11c to $8.55, Bluescope Steel advanced 3c to $1.235, Downer EDI improved 4c to $3.74, Boral fell 5c to $4.35, CSR gained 5c to $2.95, Orica slid 17c to $26.77, Telstra gained 3.5c to $2.925, Ten Network rose 3c to $1.09, Seven west jumped 8c to $4.13, Tabcorp dropped 7c to $3.22, Flight Centre added 11c to $21.73, Wesfarmers lost 26c to $31.59, Brambles declined 9c to $7.13, Asciano rose 2.5c to $1.665, David Jones retreated 14c to $3.92, Coca-Cola Amatil shed 9c to $11.33 and CSL gave back 52c to $32.54.

    Woodside Petroleum slid 32c to $40.68 in the energy sector, Santos gave back 18c to $13.36 and Origin Energy lost 26c to $15.53 while Caltex rose 9c to $11.85.

    In New Zealand the NZX 50 index was up 16.9 points at 3465.3.

    Tokyo's Nikkei 225 was 54 points firmer at 9870 while Hong Kong was closed for a public holiday.

    Gold is worth $US1,499 an ounce and the Australian dollar is changing hands at US106.95c.
