    Buying in select blue chips Thursday propelled the Dow to its eighth straight gain and the highest close in nearly 18 months, but the broader market churned as investors showed some reluctance after the recent rally.

    The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) added 45 points, or 0.2%, ending at the highest point since Oct. 1, 2008. The Dow has now ended higher for eight straight sessions -- matching the winning streak that ended on Aug. 27 of last year.

    US Stocks seesawed midday Thursday as investors welcomed reports that suggest pricing pressure remains mild and that jobless claims fell last week.

    LONDON - European stock markets wobbled on investor unease over ineffectual EU efforts to resolve a debt crisis gripping Greece.

    The mining sector came under particular pressure as the dollar firmed against the euro, with the Greek turmoil taking a toll on the single European currency.

    The London FTSE 100 index slipped 0.04 per cent, by 2.01 points, to close at 5,642.62 points after having at one point risen to a 20-month high.

    FRANKFURT - The Dax lost 11.97 points, or 0.20 per cent, to end the session at 6,012.31 points.

    PARIS - The CAC 40 fell 19.71 points, or 0.50 per cent, to 3,938.18.

    World oil prices lost ground on Thursday as dealers took their cue from the strengthening US currency, analysts said.
    New York's main contract, light sweet crude for April delivery fell 73 US cents to settle at $US82.20 a barrel.

    The Australian share market has received mixed leads from overseas, with Wall Street indices flat to mixed, gold higher, but silver, copper and oil all lower.

    At 0645 AEDT on the Sydney Futures Exchange, the June share price index contract was nine points higher at 4,888 points.

    In economic news on Friday, the Melbourne Institute releases its bulletin of economic trends.

    GOLD up $3.30 to US$1,127.50 an ounce
    SILVER down 10.1c to US$ 17.422 an ounce
    COPPER down 2.25c at US$3.3955 a pound
