    What is Beeotic?

    25/09/2016
    What is a prebiotic?

A prebiotic is defined by as ‘a selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes, in the composition and/or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus conferring benefit(s) upon the host’ (Gibson et al. 2010).

Prebiotics are natural, non-digestible fibers that pass undigested through the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract and stimulate the growth or activity of advantageous bacteria that colonize the large bowel by acting as substrate for them.

What is the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic?

A probiotic is a preparation of live bacteria as we find in yoghurt, dairy and supplements which can survive in the gut and thereby exert a health benefit. A prebiotic is a special type of dietary fibre which is not digested by the host and therefore reaches the colon where it is selectively utilised by the good bacteria that are naturally present in the colon, thereby improving the ratio of the good bacteria to the bad bacteria which will in turn lead to health benefits.

Can I take prebiotics if I’m already consuming probiotics?

Yes. The benefit of taking prebiotics with probiotics is that you are effectively covering both grounds; replenishing the body's good bacteria, and also feeding good bacteria already present in the gut. In simple terms it is like giving someone a bunch of flowers, along with flower food to keep them flourishing for longer.

What is the benefit of consuming Beeotic prebiotic honey?

Beeotic is the world’s first clinically tested prebiotic honey. This 100% natural prebiotic honey provides a natural source of prebiotics. Just 14ml a day, about a tablespoon, has been shown to improve the good-to-bad bacteria ratio in your gut by:
    Nourishing beneficial bacteria:
    • Increases the good Lactobacillus
    • Increases the good Bifidobacteria

    Suppressing bad bacteria:
    • Reduces Clostridium

    What is the recommended dose?

The clinical study showed a dose of 14mL, approximately a tablespoon, per day improved the good-to-bad bacteria ratio in your gut.

    Can I take too much?

The recommended dose is 14mL, approximately a tablespoon, per day. As a 100% natural honey, there are no known side effects of consuming a greater amount however, like most foods, we recommend eating in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

What is the best time to consume Beeotic?

You can have Beeotic at any time of day. We highly recommend drizzling it over your morning muesli, yogurt and fruit to compliment the probiotics in the yoghurt.

    How do I use it?

Like regular honey, Beeotic can be consumed by itself or mixed with your favourite foods and drinks. Drizzle over yoghurt, pour into your tea or even mix it with olive oil and balsamic for a prebiotic salad dressing.

    How does Beeotic taste?

Beeotic offers the opportunity to improve your digestive health whilst enjoying the same great taste you’ve come to expect from Capilano.

Is Beeotic safe to consume with antibiotics?

There are no known contradictions of consuming Beeotic with antibiotics. In fact, if you have been taking a course of antibiotics, a prebiotic may assist in restoring the balance of good bacteria in your gut. As always, please consult your healthcare professional beforehand.

Can I get prebiotics from other foods?

Some foods are naturally high in prebiotics such as the Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, onions, garlic, leeks and asparagus and mothers breast milk. The prebiotic content varies in these foods and even within each food group. For example, some honeys have greater prebiotic quality than others.

Why is there no nutritional panel on Beeotic?

As Beeotic is listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration as a therapeutic good. Given different requirements as a therapeutic good, we can not include the nutritional panel on Beeotic as we would with regular honey.

    What are Beeotic’s ingredients?

Beeotic is 100% pure Australian honey. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away.

The name ‘Beeotic’ comes from the incredible natural phenomenon in which, during the process of converting nectar into honey, bees add special enzymes that help create prebiotic sugars in conjunction with their own diverse gut microbiota.

Through extensive research and significant investment into industry-first technology, we are now able to harness this incredible power of the bees to launch the world’s first clinically-tested prebiotic honey.

How do I know the product claims are true?

Beeotic has been many years in the making, with research beginning in 2009 and the first clinical study conducted through the University of New South Wales in 2012 to assess the prebiotic health potential of select Australian honeys.

Whilst the scientific community has long believed honey to be a good source of prebiotics, until this time there had never been any human clinical studies to support this. The clinical study showed that particular honey types significantly raised the levels of good bacteria and suppressed harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Added to this, levels of ‘good’ bacteria decreased once the participants stopped taking the honey for a period of time.
Interestingly, not all honey has the same prebiotic qualities. Understanding this, Capilano invested in further scientific testing to develop a methodology to identify and test Australian honey for its prebiotic content. Now, every batch of Beeotic honey is tested by an independent laboratory to guarantee its prebiotic content, allowing us to offer a pure 100% natural prebiotic product for our consumers.

What does Aust L or Multi-Purpose Liquid mean?

Beeotic meets the requirements for an AUST L number according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) which is part of the Australian Government Department of Health.
These AUST L numbers show that the product meets the requirements of Therapeutic Goods Administration for supply in Australia and is included in the Australian Register or Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). The number is printed on the front of the label so that it can be easily seen and identified as .
As a therapeutic good, the dosage form must also be declared. On many supplements you will see this listed as tablet, capsule or powder. For Beeotic, the most appropriate format was Multi-Purpose liquid.

Why is Beeotic in mL rather than grams?

A requirement of listing Beeotic with the Therapeutic Goods Administration as a therapeutic good was that the format also be declared. You will be familiar with the format for many supplements, which can include tablets, capsules or powder. For Beeotic, the most appropriate format was Multi-Purpose liquid, which in turn meant we had to declare the volume of the product in mL rather than grams.

What does Purified Honey 1mL/mL mean?

As Beeotic is listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration as a therapeutic good, and has only one active ingredient (honey!) we are obliged to list this active ingredient on the front following a prescribed format.

While Purified Honey 1mL/mL may look a little odd, this simply means the product is 100% honey. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away.

    How do I store Beeotic?

Unlike many probiotics, Beeotic is shelf stable. Store below 30°C (86°F).

    Is Beeotic safe for children?

Beeotic is safe for children 12 months and older. Learn more about honey and kids.

Is it safe to consume Beeotic during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

We recommend seeking the advice of your healthcare professional prior to using Beeotic while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is Beeotic Gluten free and allergy free?

Beeotic is 100% natural Australian honey, free of additives, preservatives, artificial colours and flavours, refined sugars and gluten. As with all pure honey, Beeotic may contain traces of pollen and can be harmful to those with allergies to certain flora or bees.

    Where can I buy Beeotic?

Look for Beeotic in the honey section at leading supermarkets and select pharmacies.
