I dont get why we dont create a BTC/USD/Altcoin exchange. I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and say there is not a single exchange that is a listed company. You might not be able to control the BTC price but why not profit from fees regardless - because what is sure to continue is the exchange between BTC/USD$ and BTC/Altcoins.

Everyone is nervous about storing their coins on exchanges due to the famous mtgox incident, even though most of them probably have good security -I am not sure I dont use them. But trust would be almost certainly be given to a DCC exchange due to the stringent PUBLIC reporting requirements??????

Or make a remittance service that competes with Xoom - all Xoom does is remittance and they are a Listed company with a market cap close to $1B.
