    Hi Kelpie
Had no idea and was sitting at the ofice this arvo licking my wounds until your post. Just started a bit of research, which I recommend everyone does, and now feel a lot better though its probably one for the bottom drawer. In fact a Crown Lager is helping me celebrate. Here are 2 links with concise descriptions of what it is and what it can do: http://www.kitcocasey.com/displayMining.php?id=5 -

"Stream Sediment Sampling - Another technique to find mineralized areas is to take samples of stream sediment or soil. The theory behind this technique is that should an exposed mineral deposit exist in a remote area, small particles of minerals are gradually eroded by natural weathering processes to be distributed in stream and river sediments that accumulate downstream from the mineral deposit over long periods of time. This technique that has been employed by prospectors over millennia but new assay technology has allowed for the detection of very low concentrations of metals. The advantage of geochemistry (techniques in which soil, sediment or rock are analysed) over others is that the unit of measurement (gold for example) is the same as that which is searched for. In addition someone walking up a stream to take sediment samples is also able to observe the rocks in the stream. Most mines in existence have been found by observing mineralized rocks in stream beds that have eroded from somewhere above. Stream sediment sampling is costly and time consuming to cover large areas, however."
