CANON CITY — State health officials have extended the deadline for public comment on ablation technology, which Black Range Minerals proposes to use to extract uranium in Colorado.

Black Range, now owned by Western Uranium of Canada, initially started exploring for uranium in the Taylor Ranch area west of Canon City in 2008 and got approval from the Fremont County Commission in 2010 to expand exploration on an additional 2,220-acre site.

Ablation Mining Technology or AMT is a method of mining mineral deposits from host rock. AMT is able to disassociate, or mine, mineral coatings from sand grains in sandstone-hosted uranium mineral deposits.
Based on the number of requests, including one from county officials, state health agents are extending the public comment period until July 22. Comments can be sent via email to [email protected].
