PREVENTS inter-agency taskforce (established by Presidential Executive Order 13861)
Key points:
* development and implementation of a national,comprehensive roadmap to change how "how our nation treats mental healthand understands suicide prevention. The PREVENTS objective is to change theculture around mental health and prevent suicide — among not justVeterans but all Americans."
* this is a cabinet-level, inter-agency effort charged with developing thefirst federally coordinated national public health strategy to address suicide.
* A sole supplier contract for IBM's GRIT program (with TTB) is the outcome.
OverarchingRecommendations
1. Create and implement anational public health campaign focused on suicide prevention for Veterans andall Americans.
2. Identify and prioritize suicide surveillanceand research that focuses on a Veteran’s unique combination of individual,relationship, community, and societal factors to deliver the most effectiveintervention(s) tailored to meet their needs and circumstances.
3. Promote foundational changes to theway research is conducted — including improving the speed and accuracy withwhich research is translated into practice, improving efficiency through datasharing and data curation practices, and using innovative fundingtechniques to drive team science and reproducibility.
4. Develop effective partnerships acrossgovernment agencies and nongovernment entities and organizations toincrease capacity and impact of programs and research to empower Veterans andprevent suicide.
5. Encourage employers and academicinstitutions to provide and integrate comprehensive mental health and wellnesspractices and policies into their culture and systems.
6. Provide and promote comprehensive suicideprevention trainings across professions.
7. Identify, evaluate, and promotecommunity-based models effectively implementing evidence-informed mental healthand suicide prevention programs across the country. In doing so, leveragerelationships with community-based efforts, non-profit organizations,faith-based communities, and VSOs/MSOs focused on saving the lives of Veterans.
8. Increase implementation of programs focusedon lethal means safety (e.g., voluntary reduction of access to lethal means byindividuals in crisis, free/inexpensive and easy/safe storage options).
9. Develop a coordinated, inter-agencyfederal funding mechanism to support, resource, and facilitate theimplementation of successful evidence-informed mental health and suicideprevention programs focused on Veterans and their communities at thestate and local level.
10. Streamline access to innovative suicideprevention programs and interventions by expanding the network of qualifiedhealth care providers.
