dave, I agree, there are signs that it may be the opposite. The majority of places around Victoria/Southern NSW have had their coldest ever days on record more recently then their hottest ever days.
Having said that, most of the time that we have an extreme weather condition, it is reported as the highest or lowest, whatever the case may be, since such and such a date. In other words, most extreme events are merely repeats of similar events often long ago, we don't seem to be breaking new ground. even this latest drought, depending on how it is measured, may not be as bad as the federation drought, and reports made at the time of that drought indicated that it wasn't as bad as a drought 50 years previously.
Right now we are getting almost daily warnings of extreme UV radiation levels. You don't have to be Einstein to work out that either the Sun is sending out more solar radiation or there is less filtering in the atmosphere. If this increased radiation does increase temperatures on the surface, all we need is one frost or a decent cold night and all that heat has escaped to space, and we certainly have been getting a few cold nights recently.
