Clearly some deep seated psychological need to demonstrate that you're a "hard man"

PS analogy (noun) - a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based:

ie a voter responding to a politician's smear of a particular group and a dog responding to a whistle.

The analogy compares the feature - "the response" not the things "the voter and the dog",

In this case the response, well its automatic with no thought processes involved.
