the original puzzle was deleted because it was on the wrong forum, but the replies are still online, this is what I posted then

Everyone had a $100 debt, but they also had $100 owing to them by one of the others, all the $100 on the bench enabled was for those debts and credits to be settled, nothing was created.

It does not really achieve anything and is kind of irrelevent to the real world, where most owe far more than they are owed.
