Yes I believe you are right that most companies would defer paying tax as long as possible - I have shares in BSL and they certainly didn't voluntarily pay monthly tax when their billions of tax losses were eventually fully used so shareholders got one extra unfranked dividend that could have been avoided by paying upfront.
