Looks like the rumour goes back forever (March 2015)
"Should South32 in fact have an interest in graphite and Syrah — analysts visited by South32 on its recent whirlwind tour say graphite was at least mentioned — it would be keeping with the cut-loose company’s desire to establish its credentials as a separate company, as well as lock in to near-term growth opportunities in a “new age’’ commodity."
