We need to bear in mind that China's 'socialism with Chinese characteristics' is as sophisticated as the old USSR was brutal and clumsy.
On its periphary, there are ostensibly independent corporations, but at it's heart remains a monolithic, ruthless, communist State.
Be mindful of what later happened to citizen 'blossoms' who rashly bloomed after Chairman Mao invited criticism of the CCP in 1957 'let a hundred flowers blossom' he said....execution.
The proclamation by the reforming Deng, 'To get rich is glorious' found better purchase in the Chinese soil, since the communists pragmatically came to appreciate they could control rich citizens and corporations as effectively as poor citizens. It was a pragmatic win-win, the polar opposite of communist Pol Pot's lunatic shift to an agrarian society.
The media is recently reporting on a CCP organisation which insinuates itself into Australia and elsewhere, to China's benefit, not for exclusively commercial purposes.
Coincidentally, the Defence Dept just bought some land, the purchase of which was being looked at by a Chinese company, as a 'buffer' for its WA site - one of the three highly sensitive and vital 'over the horizon radar' bases operated in Australia
Apart from active members, expatriate Chinese here are subjected to threats and sometimes co-opted to further China's State interests, contrary to their own wish, and to Australia's own interests.
No-one can take seriously that any Chinese enterprise is not ultimately beholden to the CCP and can be asked, told or required to do its bidding, should the need ever arise.
In a real sense, they are only 'licensed' by the CCP to be wealthy and successful and that license can be withdrawn, slowly, or quickly.
There is generally no need, because citizens understand the terms of the licence under which they can become 'gloriously' rich.
When did we last hear any criticism of communism, the CCP or calls for democracy from rich Chinese citizens? Hmm, perhaps that is not self-preservation, but proof that 100% love the wonderful system 100%...
Australia needs to guard Chinese immigrants from this pernicious influence to protect their freedom, and ours.
