The inflation you are referring to can be compared broadly with Metcash sales but inflation is measured for a different period. You will find that the supermarket would have stock from the previous quarter in the sales figures and there would be a time lag effect with their sales vs the Bureau of Statistics measurements.
But yes I have no doubt that they are glossing it up a little, as most companies do.
