Before the last election, the LNP promised to correct an anomaly whereby Ex defence members benefits were being eroded due to the method used to index the pensions.
Unlike the Age Pension which is calculated as a percentage of average weekly earnings, The defence pension is calculated using the consumer price index.
The effect of this was that the defence pension was gradually losing it's buying power, something that the LNP said was unfair.
To correct this anomaly, the then opposition said they would legislate to have the service pension, calculated in the same way as the aged pension.
From what I can tell from the budget, the way the aged pension will be indexed is about to undergo a change that will erode some of it's future value.
Does that mean that the promised benefits to ex servicemen will be eroded also?
I know from discussions with other ex servicemen that the promised changes to the indexing of service pensions had a big bearing on how they voted in the last election.
