"They have their presidential election on a Tuesday. Massive amounts of minorities are barred from voting. Many Native Americans legally cannot vote. Voting districts are gerrymandered to hell and back again. Many poor areas have their voting booths moved way out of town, where there is no public transport. Early election is banned on university campuses."
IMO, the real reason behind compulsory voting is to prevent any hindrance to any voter. It is a very important element in thwarting a variety of tricks used to disenfranchise voters.
