South African National Energy Association MD Doug Kuni said none of Mr Martins’s announcements were a surprise, but they set time lines for various projects.

These include the publication of a gas utilisation master plan for public comment next month.

The plan would include infrastructure development options for exploiting South Africa’s shale gas reserves.

International gas companies are waiting to begin full exploration of the reserves, with estimates of resources varying from the Petroleum Agency of South Africa’s 40-trillion cubic feet to the US Information Agency’s 480-trillion cubic feet.
