The suicide rate in Australia peaked in 1963 at 17.5 suicides per 100 000 people. It dropped to about 11 suicides per 100 000 in 1984, then increased to around 15 per 100 000 by 1997. From the period 1997 to the present suicide has been in steady decline and stood at around 10 per 100 000 people in 2011. Suicide is most common in the 85+ age group in the form of euthenasia.
