Sarcophagus raises an interesting point in that "Desire" seems to be the culprit. The Wealthy Western pleasure seeking cultures seem to have a predisposition towards depression. If you are not happy with what you have, how can you ever be happy?
You can clearly see it in our kids, if they don't get their way they scream and shout and strut around until they do. And you can't even smack them because they are just too precious!
There are things you just don't have any control over...but what do they teach our kids....you can be and have whatever you want....that just isn't true.
Brainwashing people with unrealistic expectations is clearly a recipe for disaster.
