Hi
I don't have any similar experiences.
My suggestion is to have some detachment from the situation as you can not make decisions or be responsible for any other person. The choice to live or die is ultimately the individuals' choice.
It doesn't mean you can't be supportive and caring.
It sounds like your son-in-law needs professional help to gain empowering strategies. Directing him to focus on what good and positive in his world.
I was listening to something on the radio recently about people surviving on rubbish dumps where the whole family works night and day, even young children, to make 90c a day. We have to consider ourselves incredibly lucky in comparison!
Hopefully, some here have experiences to relate which will assist you.
God bless.
