Oh oh. DERM mouthpiece blathers on knowingly without knowing the requirements of their own licence to sewerage plant operators.

Going by what happened when DEEDI required Kingaroy farmers to get benzene contamination clearance before their cattle could be sold when there was no approved test to detect (and by negative result to clear for sale) benzene at the nominated levels in stock, I expect a DERM officer would rather stay in bed tomorrow morning. By the time tomorrow is over he/she will have a second basal orifice free curtesy of either the DERM executive or the minister.

'The Department of Environment and Resource Management said it was "not aware of any problems at water or sewage treatment plants before the floods".

DERM said sewerage operators were required "to monitor their outflows and the quality of water downstream, including monitoring for enterococci".

But Queensland Urban Utilities, which operates the sewage plants along the river, said it "does not monitor bacterial pollution in the Brisbane River. We monitor our treatment plants in accordance with our DERM licence".'
