The cost of electric appliances generally is massively lower now than (say) 20 years ago. For example a new computer in 1997 cost around $2000. They now cost (say) $700. It's the same trend across the board with televisions etc. It's not really about which generation is "lucky," the housing question at least is about what policy response there should be to changes in the market.
