What is the answer ?
Governments own big swathes of land on the outskirts of major cities - these will have to be developed with smaller houses in mind and plenty of public transport options available .
Nobody minded living in a 3 x 1 during the 50's/60's , weatherboards , wooden floors , basic kitchen and bathrooms , they served a purpose . They don't need the 1/4 acre block - 400 square metres is more than enough . What's stopping that happening again now ? Forget about 4 x 2's , cinema rooms , huge open style living . Put them into starter houses , let them pay them off and then move on to bigger , better later
I am not putting an "Olympic Village" style forward - but that has served its purpose over the years (plus social problems) -
Governments also need to look at placing their workplaces in these areas to encourage local employment .
