Overall PFS was chosen as the primary end point for a number of reasons:
1. Reimbursement bodies will follow this kind of study more closely.
2. Gets more widespread coverage by oncologists (they are more interested in the outcomes of such a potentially amazing treatment)
3. Faster enrolment of patients.

As mentioned in the OP 40% of patients had cancer that spread from the bowel to the liver as well as other areas of the body, given that 40% represents a significant portion of the sample size there is no way that you would have been able to achieve the primary endpoint. However I'm assuming that the other 60% had mCRC which spread only to the liver (occurs in about 20% of mCRC cases), it is these cases im curious to know the answer to, especially given that the secondary endpoint was achieved. Also based on this did it lead to an increase in OS, or did the tumors shrink significantly so that the patient could potentially be operated on.

Also this this just provides further confidence that the results for HCC will be positive.
