    Hi David,

    A bit of an achedemic question, but I would't be too worried about the effect of coal tailings dam failure in Queensland coal mines - with all the flood water the dilution quantum is large (say 100,000:1); whereas in Kentucky (your story below) with low flow in the river a big impact was observed. Most mines have a reasonable wastewater management system (oftentime >3x dams in series) with re-use on dust suppression etc. If what I saw on TV tonight is representitive they have bigger concerns than Total Dissolved Solids pollution: a massive drag line was submurged in stormwater with only its Jib exposed - could take some months to return to full production IMO

    I think BHP has almost learned their environmental lesson/s from Ok Tedi but BP's Gulf disaster was a timely reminder on the risk management side of their business - is the bottom line or reputation important??
