Correct me if I'm wrong here, Dick complains he was getting a way too big refund but didn't know he had all that invested

To get that amount back he would have to have about $24,000,000 invested in dividend paying shares, say @ 5% return which would give him about $1,200,000 in dividends and then he would get that $500,000 back in franking credits.
So a man who is a multi millionaire saye he has no idea of what they were and if he was so concerned why is he still getting half of the original amount spoken about.

    Poor Dick, poor little Dick

Mr Smith, who made his name and fortune with his chain of electronics stores, said he was paid about $500,000 in franking credits in 2016-17, and about $250,000 in 2017-18.
His adviser Phil Murrell confirmed those numbers.

The entrepreneur said he had no idea what franking credits were before discovering the payments, and complained to the Australian Tax Office.
