    sitting duck,

    there is are DHIs and DHIs:

    1. bright spots ( increase in amplitude) generally indicates the presence of gas....in a highly porous sand even 5% of gas in water can do the trick.

    2. dim spots ( like in the NWS) also indicate gas, but where the shales (seals) have similar accoustic impedance to the gas bearing sands.

    3. Flat spots that represent a hydrocarbon water contact.

    Then again one could look at AVO analysis....and combine this with the structural picture. A geoscientist worth his/her salt, with a sound knowledge of the regional and local geology, should be in a position to reduce the risk of a dry hole dramatically.

    If Woodside interpret it as a DHI, I'd value their interpretation far more than that of the aromatherapy oil company, or its likes.
