Coal mine blast leaves 56 dead
    From correspondents in Beijing
    October 21, 2004

ABOUT 56 people were killed and a further 100 reported missing in a coal mine blast in central China, state media quoted local officials as saying today.

The blast occurred late yesterday in Henan Province, Xinhua news agency quoted local coal mine safety officials as saying.

There were more than 400 people working at the mine when the blast occurred, it said. More than 200 people had escaped but another 148 were stranded in the mine.

Rescue workers were continuing efforts to recover the missing and stranded.

The cause for the blast was under investigation, it said.

China, the world's biggest consumer and producer of coal, has a poor mining safety record with many pits reported to be in an abominable condition.

In the first six months this year alone, 3758 people died in mine accidents in China, according to the State Bureau for Work Safety.

Some experts say the real figure is much higher as local authorities cover up some fatal accidents
