nec develops fast computer

TOKYO NEC, Japan's biggest seller of personal computers, said Wednesday that it had developed the world's fastest supercomputer, with almost double the speed of International Business Machines' fastest machine.

NEC plans to ship 700 SX-8 computers in three years, with a monthly rental fee starting at about ¥1.17 million, or $10,771, the company said. Shipments will start in December.

The computer can make 65 trillion calculations per second, compared with 36 trillion operations for IBM's Blue Gene/L, NEC said. IBM unveiled Blue Gene/L in September.

NEC said it had already received 100 orders for the SX-8.
