Hi jayson1,
Cockatoo and Koolan have been mining for decades in the same area as Irvine. Both have cyclone shelters if a cyclone approaches. If a category 5 cyclone approaches than it is normal to evacuate all non-essential staff to either Derby or Broome.
A cyclone of the size to evacuate the island is pretty rare...maybe once every 10 years. The islands get hourly updates on cyclones and there is alays plenty of time to evacute people if necessary.
What is the cost of this? A few shifts every few years or so. Therefore the cost to the business is small and people are not in danger.
Likewise buildings are built for cyclones. If a category 5 hit there would be damage, however this would be a delay in production at worst, most infrastructure is insured for this type of event.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Tony.
