Narwhals have a tusk that is packed with nerves and covered in tiny holes to allow sea water to enter. The tusks can sense changes in the environment such as temperature and water salinity. Essentially a probe for exploration. Like a Diamond Drill rod or geophysical suite of tools (eg. EM, VLEM, IP, Gravity, Magnetics, Seismic).
