I've got a Canon S40 (4.0 mp)....absolutely superd camera. Cost around $1300 duty free one year ago.
You can now by the Canon S45 for around $1200 duty free. Updated model but haven't looked that closely in to it.

It may seem as if I'm giving Canon a plug.....well, I am. I spent several months looking at every type of digital camera possible and eventually it came down to the Canon for quality under $1500.
