    I have been doing a little research of late and it looks like there has been increased precipitation over Greenland which has lead to increased snow fall.

    So if there has been extra snow (we both know the reason to more snow - climate change) leading to insulation which doesn't allow the surface that was exposed to melt from last season to properly re-freeze. So although there may be an increase in mass gain during the winter, it may not necessarily translate into hard ice and could turn into surface water come spring. Which then adds to increased internal warm water flows etc etc

    As for the Arctic, well it looks like this will be the 4th lowest total since records began.
