Tracking technologies out to thwart fraud

MANHASSET, N.Y
A recent software glitch at New York's JFK International Airport that forced baggage handlers to identify individual bags served as a reminder of the continuing importance of underappreciated tracking technology.
Better micro-tracking technologies are here, and industry executives said more are on the way.
An Australian company, DataDot Technology, said it has developed micro-identifier technology that uses a laser to etch unique, microscopic identifiers onto sand-grain-sized disks made of a polymer substrate.
The 1-mm-diameter disks are attached by the thousands using a permanent adhesive, and are visible under ultraviolet light.'Called DataDot DNA, the device allows information to be registered in the company's database repository for later use in establishing ownership.
DataDots also has developed a dot-sized identifier that could, for example, identify a stolen car. Its technologies are designed to protect everything from clothing to computers to be protected against theft or counterfeiting.
Automakers including Audi, BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Volkswagen and Subaru Australia, Ltd. are using the technology to identify individual vehicles and their expensive parts.'
DataDots claims the technology could reduce auto theft by up to 73 percent.'
Ian Allen, co-founder and CEO of DataDot Technology Ltd.,'said: "The DataDot DNA concept is expandable far beyond the original disk format." For instance, etching identifier information on a metallic substrate such as copper could cut skyrocketing thefts of the material.
Another version of the technology lets clothing manufacturers sew microthreads into garments, thereby preventing fraud or counterfeiting. DataDots has partnered with the Australian government's Scientific Industry Research Organization to jointly develop forensic tracers to be mixed into concrete, paper, plastics, inks and even explosives to identify their origin.
