"thought the tax isn't payable for a while" – The difference between the exercise price (zero in these cases) and the market price of the share is considered to be a salary payment, not a capital gain. As a salary payment, it is subject to PAYG income tax and must be remitted to the ATO within one calendar month. The directors don't have much discretion about when they sell, or how long they take... unless they happen to have some other source of funds they can tap into.
