Hey trout ,I think the companies directors have a far greater understanding of the markets mechanics and the subsequent ,short to medium term adversities and challenges the market cap faces, opposed to retail investors,as large players go about building positions through share price destruction better known as (shorting).On the ASX institutions some with longer term time frames build positions,hence our high institutional ownership.in contrast in the US we have downward pressure on the market cap as 2 large players ,take up large short positions of around 5 million adrs which is a large percentage of total adrs ,in an effort to cap any short term share price rises to potentially accumulate at cheaper prices.If the science works , the patient will be rewarded,but in the short ,the company is being hard balled.With almost no or neglible institutional adr holdings in the US these 2 companies are in a position to .do as they wish to the market cap virtually unchallenged.
