@daicosisgod; in my youth only 5% of kids finished Year 12 - most battlers' kids left school after reaching 15 years of age and outside of inner Melbourne most people were indeed battlers.

Prior to Gough Whitlam almost no battlers at all went to university due to the course fees.

Country kids like me also had to pay board / travel. Even after winning scholarships we had to work part-time to make ends meet and back then it was a case of doing whatever job became available to you - I never received unemployment benefits etc. I even had to leave the boarding house the Ed Dept ran the day after entering it because I couldn't afford to buy the jacket they required you to wear at dinner times ... such is life!
