Fred Hoyle and N. Chandra Wickramasinghe were supporters of the Exigenesis hypothesis and further contended that lifeforms continue to enter the Earth's atmosphere, and may be responsible for epidemics, new diseases, and the triggers for evolution spurts

Creationists give great importance to the written word, especially when it is alleged that the words come from a perceived authority. The fallacy of appealing to authority, however, is committed when a quote is presented with the author identified as an expert in a subject on which he or she either is not actually an expert or cannot be impartial.

"The problem for biology is to reach a simple beginning," say astronomers Fred Hoyle and Chandra Wickramasinghe. "Fossil residues of ancient life-forms discovered in the rocks do not reveal a simple beginning.... so the evolutionary theory lacks a proper foundation." (Life Publication)
As stated in the quote, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe are astronomers and should not be considered experts on abiogenesis. They are critical of evolution, promoting instead panspermia, and their ideas do not represent the scientific consensus.

During the 1981 scientific creationist trial in Arkansas, Wickramasinghe was the only scientist testifying for the defense, which in turn was supporting creationism. In addition, he wrote that the Archaeopteryx fossil finding is a forgery, a charge that the expert scientific community considers an "absurd" and "ignorant" statement.
