When a person is employed to do a job, whether it's a company director or the office tea lady (if there is such a job these days) you are naturally expected to do your best and shouldn't expect to be rewarded over and above your pay for doing it.
It's your job.
If people expect to be given extra pay (or shares) for doing a good job, the converse should apply, yet I have never seen or heard of a company executive being docked pay for not doing his best. However, I bet if the tea lady mucked up your mid-morning brew day after day, she would be out the front door.
