D: I'm joined today by the Tasmanian Minister of Land Use.
C: It's a pleasure to be here
D: Minister, you recently announced that 450,000 hectares of western Tasmania are to be designated as a "Reserve".
C: Yes, we are very proud to have set aside this area of outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity, which is of such great benefit to the community.
D: As a nature reserve.
C: A nature reserve?... No, No, As a "Regional Reserve", to protect the land for it's proper use.
D: Due to the Old Growth Forests, and rare wildlife?
C: Exactly. The forests and wildlife combined with the underground mineral wealth meant there was a considerable risk of the land being misappropriated or exploited, so we have protected it.
D: From the mining companies.
C: From the mining companies?... No, No, from the Environmentalists and the Greens.
D: From the Environmentalists and the Greens?
C: Yes. With the unspoiled natural beauty and rare species there was a very high risk of it being turned into National Park, so we've protected it.
D: For the mining companies?
C: Yes, mainly for mineral exploration and the development of mineral deposits... but there will be some timber harvesting as well.
D: Of the Old Growth Forest?
C: Yes, if some of the land is being cleared we really don't want the trees going to waste.
D: But this is an area of natural and cultural significance!
C: Oh we recognize that. So of course we will absolutely be protecting and maintaining the natural and cultural values.
D: Natural and cultural values?
C: Yes, the natural and cultural values.
D: But, not the plants and wildlife?
C: No, not the plants and wildlife... just the values.
