SAN RAFAEL IN PUNO RESTARTS PRODUCTION BUT MINES IN CUSCO AND APURÍMAC REMAIN CLOSED Mar 4, 2023 | Mining
"The San Rafael mine in Melgar province, Puno, owned by Minsur, has restarted operations which had been suspended for the last 50 days due to national strikes. The mine is Peru’s and South America’s largest producer of tin.The mine has been able to reopen due to talks with two local communities, including a number of community members who work in the mine. Restarting of operations will take place gradually, with full employment and production expected to return by the end of March. The mine estimates that the suspension of operations due to protests has led to a loss of over US$124 million, of which an estimated US$32.7 million were lost in taxes to the state.Progress between San Rafael and local communities is indicative of the importance of agreements between mines and local populations. This is especially the case where local populations benefit from mines, including through direct employment, as in this case.Elsewhere however, ongoing roadblocks in Puno and the threat of recommencement of roadblocks in Sicuani (Cusco), as part of the national protests, means that Las Bambas, Antapaccay and Hudbay mines are unable to guarantee transport of minerals to the port of Matarani , and thus have not yet recommenced production.Despite suspensions elsewhere, Quellaveco, Anglo American’s new copper mine in Moquegua, has announced that it expects to reach full capacity by mid-2023."
The three mines mentioned in the text as still closed are copper mines.
