Discussions about race are not encouraged in Australia. To wit the recent referendum debate that saw anyone opposed as being racist. Even criticism of the change to the name Coon®™ cheese saw anyone who saw the move as unnecessary copped a fair bit of flak. Apparently when shopping in the local supermarket and reaching for Coon®™ cheese somehow was taken as an insult by the original** Australians. So Ming Long if you want frank and open debate about race Australia is not the country to conduct such a debate.
Ming Long tells Wang Gungwu lecture Australia still has a way to go in talking about race
The White Australia policy may be a thing of the past, but the country still has a long way to go when it comes to talking about race, according to diversity advocate and industry leader Ming Long AM.
Delivering the keynote speech at the third annual Wang Gungwu Lecture on Monday, Ms Long told the Canberra audience that racialisation was an "uncomfortable truth" in Australia that "creates a society in which some groups are racially privileged, while others are racially marginalised".
