From my LGL experience, a large spike down in the last hour of trade signals a fall in POG overnight. Gold has not been able to make any real headway in 2 months, where each gain has a subsequent (quicker) fall.
In fact, looking at the 60 day chart, there is a nice Head and Shoulders pattern formed (if you believe in charting), signaling a $920 resistance level.
Yes, there is definite shorting going on, but this could be for less sinister reasons then you imply.
IMO, based on the close of LGL today and the chart and the (possible) short-term euphoria with banks and the DOW, I would expect a fall below $900 for POG tonight.
