Firstly, Algorithmic automatic trading or BOTS and shorting have nothing to do with each other as far as i know.
When people refer to bots, it is automatic trading done by instos that runs on an algorithm written for that stock. These are the trades you see for small numbers of shares. The buys and sells of these Bots react to the market and move depending on sentiment and the sp.
My explanations are simplistic, i like it that way.
