    BACKHAUL INFRASTRUCTURE
Ovum research director David Kennedy, who will be presenting at the Australian OTT Summit in Sydney on Wednesday, said it was feasible that upgrading networks across the industry may collectively cost hundreds of millions of dollars – a move that could affect customers if the charges are passed on.

"For live streaming … you need broadcast technologies and the physical infrastructure to back that up," he said.
"When Netflix launched, we had a lot of issues, but the problem wasn't the 'last-mile' [internet connection] it was the backhaul infrastructure behind it and that's where telcos are under pressure."
Alcatel-Lucent fixed networks chief technology officer Dave Eckard said streaming services such as Netflix were causing huge amounts of pressure on networks around the world. His company supplies the broadband infrastructure being used to build the NBN.
"This is where you'll see some changes – how we handle this incredible demand on those parts of the network," he said. "While the focus is on access technologies and speeds, I think in the coming years it's really going to be about the core and CDN.
"The absolute cost is going to be very high."
