Is anyone in this industry aware of what is happening at Merredin in WA right now - there is a self propelled air blast slow rotary drill cutting 30 metres of granite an hour on a 8.5 inch bit using a fraction of the diesel of Rig 100 at Jolokia for instance, running with a team of just four men on a footprint of less than 1000 sq metres, and it is on its way to 3000 mt TD in this test well. Now I know that Jolokia is 4900 metres - wow - but CKK's GT 3000 is on its very first well and on the basis of results so far looks like it will be able to go to 4000mt. The rig builder - who has done not much else but build drill rigs all his life - is already planning the GT 5000 with a margin to get to the depths of wells like Jolokia. This is a game changing technology for geothermal because it is going to cut the cost of these wells in more than half, at last. Although if you owned one of those massive, stationary platforms that take months to construct on site and then pull down and move in 25 trucks you might be worried.
