Ballad in the hinterland: Coalition cooperation is haunting in Siumut. Trouble in the hinterland: Coalition cooperation is haunting in Siumut.
With a little more than a year to go until elections, unrest has gradually arisen in Siumut's hinterland, where local branches in several places in the country have Naalakkersuisut on the program. Although on paper there is more than a year until elections in Inatsisartut, there is already election talk in parts of Siumut's hinterland. Out in the country's local associations, there is frustration with the policies being pursued in the self-government tower - especially in recent times.
The Fisheries Act, which Minister for Fisheries and Hunting Kim Kielsen (Social Democrat) is behind, is a good example of this, and in fact the handling of the long-awaited law gives reason to think about elections, according to the deputy chairman of Siumut in Aasiaat, Enok Sandgreen. "If the current coalition maintains the fisheries law as it stands, we believe that elections should be called," Sandgreen said. Read also: Scientists: New fisheries law could end in disaster. The upcoming fisheries law could cause the closure of three factories in Aasiaat, according to Enok Sandgreen, which is one of the reasons why the local branch believes that the law should be rejected. Pressured living conditions. Earlier this year, scientists pointed out that the fisheries law could have major consequences for dinghy fishermen and their families, as they could end up losing their livelihoods. And the citizens of the coast are already under enough pressure, says Enok Sandgreen.- Everything has become more expensive. The value of money has diminished and the wages of ordinary workers have not changed. It may not be as big a problem in Nuuk as it is on the coast, where it goes downwards, he says. This is despite the fact that Siumut's chairman, Erik Jensen, reported back in December last year that several initiatives were underway to do something about the deterioration of living conditions in Greenland. However, he could not say when help will come. New talk about uraniumIt is not only in Aasiaat that people are not satisfied with the state of affairs. At Siumut in Uummannaq, the chairman, Johannes Mathiassen, also believes that fishing can no longer be counted on as the main income. Therefore, he wants the extraction of raw materials and uranium-containing raw materials to be put to a referendum, as it can generate income for the whole country.- We cannot leave the raw materials in the ground when there is a lot of money to be made from them, says Johannes Mathiassen. The extraction of uranium was also a major theme in the 2021 elections, when IA went to the polls on a zero-tolerance policy. Therefore, it became a pill that Siumut had to swallow before the coalition could become a reality a year later. Cooperation on the block. It is not only uranium and the fisheries law that are causing concern among local chairmen. The entire coalition cooperation should be reassessed, several of them believe. Among other things, the chairman of Uummannaq believes that the coalition should be updated and examine itself for weaknesses, but he does not otherwise wish to comment further on the current cooperation. The same applies to both Siumut's local branch in Ilulissat and Qasigiannguit, where the current cooperation is actually on the program when the groups meet these days. According to Enok Sandgreen of Aasiaat, radical changes are required if the coalition is to continue. "The relationship we have now is a very difficult situation and if it continues like this, it is time to hold elections," he said.
