As mentioned my area of expertise has really been in speculation but rule changes have killed that off (at least for now) thus my reason for posing the question regarding dividend stocks. I appreciate your comments. I am not scared to do my homework and will certainly investigate more about corporate bonds.

Hate to state the obvious but there are no truly safe investments except cash. Perhaps the better term would be less risky.
bonds can lose capital when interest rates go the wrong direction. Once interest rates get down so close to zero, realistically they have very little if any potential growth left.
