Replying to alquimista
You need to pay Australian tax, but you get a refund of the foreign tax credit. Lets suppose you get a $100 diviend, 15% american tax was withheld, so you receive $85 in your bank account. And suppose your marginal Australian tax rate was 40%. Then when you fill out your tax return you pay $40 in tax - $15 foreign tax credit = $25 tax paid to ATO.
