Some of the points, the compulsion to lodge tax returns is near already redundant. With e-tax and pre-fillers people log on to tax system and can prefill their tax return and lodge without any complication. OK a return is still necessary but need for an accountant is gone. Some peole have higher expenditure than others in earning their income. The option of lodging a tax return has to remain.

"Common themes in the submissions concern the current rate of the SG and the level of concessions provided to encourage additional saving" it is odd the current government is moving away from this scenario. The incentives to salary sacrifice and maximise welfare is being abolished from 1/7/09. Rightly or wrongly this will stop many people contributing extra into super.

"Many submissions discuss the effect of the ageing population and the need to decrease the disincentives for older Australians to remain in the workforce". This has already been addressed in part by Howard/Costello. The Seniors Australian Tax Offset, abolish compulsory cashing of super, Pension Bonus Scheme etc are all incentives to keep working past 65 years.

It will be a complex review and I hope the government do not treat it as a means of how to grab extra tax which I fear they will.
